For NI businesses that move goods between Northern Ireland and either Great Britain or non-EU countries from 1 January 2021, there are two recommended initial action points:
NI businesses should sign up for the Trader Support Service to obtain free information and updates on the changes which will come into force from 1 January 2021. The Trader Support Service will also be available to submit digital customs declarations on behalf of NI businesses, if required.
NI businesses will need an XI EORI number to move goods between NI and either GB or non-EU countries from 1 January 2021.
To get an XI EORI number, you must already have a GB EORI number. You can check if you have a GB EORI number here by entering your VAT registration number with the prefix GB and three zeros at the end (without any spaces). Otherwise you can apply for a GB EORI number here.
There are three ways to obtain an XI EORI number as follows:
1. If you have a GB EORI number and you sign up for the Trader Support Service by 23 November 2020 here, you will be provided with an XI EORI Number.
2. If you have a GB EORI number and HMRC considers that you need an XI EORI number, HMRC will issue you with one during December 2020.
3. If you do not receive an XI EORI number during December 2020, please call one of our Brexit contacts below.
The situation is developing on an almost daily basis and we will circulate further information regarding Brexit in due course.
In the meantime, if you have any queries regarding obtaining an XI EORI number, please do not hesitate to contact one of our Brexit contacts below:
