Significant changes are coming for company directors and individuals with significant control (PSCs) under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023. From 18 November 2025, identity verification will become a legal requirement.
The reforms are designed to strengthen the accuracy of the Companies House register and combat economic crime. Failure to comply will be a criminal offence, carrying the risk of fines, disqualification, and restrictions on filing with Companies House.
New directors and PSCs from 18 November 2025 – Verification must be completed before incorporation or appointment.
Existing directors and PSCs – A 12-month transitional period applies from 18 November 2025, usually aligned with the filing of your next confirmation statement.
Verification only needs to be completed once by each individual, regardless of the number of directorships held.
Method 1 – Direct Verification (Recommended)
No fee, using the GOV.UK One Login service.
Requires a biometric passport (from any country) or a UK photo driving licence.
Method 2 – Via an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)
An ACSP can complete the verification on your behalf – useful if you do not have the required ID for direct verification.
With either method each individual must have their own unique email address to complete the process.
You will receive a personal Companies House ID code by email. This must be kept safe, as it will be required for:
Filing confirmation statements.
New appointments as a director or PSC.
Incorporating new companies.
Although the requirement does not become mandatory until November 2025, voluntary verification is already available. We recommend starting early to avoid last-minute issues and potential disruption to your company’s statutory filings.
